Japan’s 2 Fraction Prostate “Weekend Radiotherapy”

Tohoku University Hospital, under the direction of Dr. Hideo Zhang, is set to become the first hospital in Japan to offer “Weekend Radiotherapy” on Saturdays, starting January 11, 2025.

This initiative aims to support the working generation, patients who live far away, and their families by helping them balance treatment with work and life. Initially, the program will focus on prostate cancer treatment in the Department of Radiation Therapy, led by Dr. Keiichi Jingu, using the MR Linac. This new approach addresses the challenges faced by working individuals and elderly patients who find it difficult to visit the hospital every weekday, as well as family members who struggle to accompany them during the week.

Prostate cancer, which often affects the working generation, has traditionally required daily hospital visits for radiation therapy, making it hard to balance work and life. The “Weekend Radiotherapy” program will provide cancer radiotherapy with MR Linacs every Saturday, offering the latest treatment options to more patients, including those of working age and those living in remote areas.
